Open Road

Fog of War Driving Maps: Roads Explored vs Places Visited

A fog-of-war travel map reveals where you have explored. A driving roads map collects the roads in your recorded drives. Open Road is useful for seeing recorded roads together; that is different from promising a literal fog-clearing mode or a complete history of every place you visited.

A pin and a track preserve different memories

A visited-place pin records a destination. A track records a path. A map of roads driven can show the line between places, including a detour that a list of destinations would miss.

Fog-of-war apps add an exploration metaphor by revealing covered areas as you move. The visual treatment and what counts as explored depend on the app. A road line should not automatically be interpreted as complete coverage of the surrounding neighbourhood.

What Open Road puts on the map

Open Road combines roads from its recorded drives, while the drive log keeps individual journeys with a date, time and distance. Start with one verified recording, then use the overall map to see how that drive joins your other recorded roads.

A map built from recordings cannot be assumed to include years of earlier travel. This page does not claim automatic imports, arbitrary manual road painting or a literal Fog of World style reveal mode.

Pick the view that matches your goal

For a driving record and drive stats, try Open Road. For exploration across different kinds of travel, inspect Fog of World and its track features. Compare how each app records and moves existing data before assuming you can switch without starting a new map.

Questions, answered

Is a map of roads driven the same as a visited-country map?
No. A roads map preserves recorded paths. A visited-country map marks larger places and does not show every road between them.
Does Open Road have a literal fog-clearing mode?
This guide describes its map of recorded roads. It does not claim a separate literal fog-clearing mode.
Will my map include drives before I installed the app?
Do not assume earlier travel is included. The map described here is based on drives recorded in Open Road.
